The body of a Wantagh woman was found in the Caribbean nation of Turks and Caicos on Oct. 16, it was reported today. Local law enforcement authorities are treating her death as murder.
Marie Kuhnla, 61, was traveling with two colleagues from the Legal Aid Society of Suffolk County, where she worked in the Family Court division. Her body was found near the Turkoise Club Med resort where she was staying on Grace Bay on the island of Providenciales, in the western part of the country.
Kuhnla’s friends attempted to report her missing on Oct. 14, and she was officially listed as missing the following day. The nature of her visit was unknown.
The U.S. Department of State has had a level 2 travel advisory in effect for the island nation since Jan. 18. The islands are subject to “violent crime, such as robberies, shootings and home invasions,” according to the advisory. “Police presence and emergency response are limited.”
