One step closed to honoring Joseph Sanford Jr.

An idea first introduced by the Town of Hempstead nearly two years ago is one step closer to fruition as the legislation introduced by U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) last year to rename an Inwood waterway in honor of deceased volunteer firefighter Joseph Sanford Jr. passed unanimously on Aug. 1.

A supermarket for all ‘Seasons’

The shelves of the Seasons store on Central Avenue in Lawrence were reported to be empty and rumors were running rampant on the financial health of the eight-store kosher supermarket chain.

Five Towns libraries lambaste Forbes op-ed

There are two public libraries in the Five Towns, the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library on Broadway in Hewlett, and the Peninsula Public Library on Central Avenue in Lawrence. In addition to lending books and movies to cardholders, both taxpayer-supported institutions provide services that can range from free meals for children during the summer to college preparation classes at no charge.

Remembering the Inwood Market

There’s history hiding just under your nose in the Five Towns. Like most areas of Long Island, the shops and homes of yesteryear have been torn down and rebuilt, but with a little bit of digging the past can come rushing back.

Celebrate National Roller Coaster Day at Adventureland

Long Island Adventureland will celebrate National Roller Coaster Day with free rides on both of the amusement park’s two roller coasters — Turbulence and the Lady Bug — for guests who donate to the annual school supply drive on Thursday, Aug. 16.

Good ‘clean’ messy fun at LWA camp

Every Friday campers at the Lawrence Woodmere Academy summer camp have a special event. They had a wet and wild day in mid-July, are planning a carnival day in mid-August, and on July 27 they held their messy day.

HAFTR goes golfing and ‘spa-ing’

The Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway held its 11th annual Golf Spring Classic and Spa Day at the Seawane Country Club in Hewlett Harbor in memory of Jacob Greenberg, a former HAFTR student. HAFTR, which has campuses in Lawrence and Cedarhurst, has grades from preschool to high school.

LWA campers perform community service

Campers attending Lawrence Woodmere Academy’s summer camp not only take part in the usual fun activities, but also performs community service. This year, the camp partnered with New Horizon Counseling Center and campers visited The Club in Hewlett and performed songs from their play “Honk” (the story of the ugly duckling) and counselors in training visited the Meeting Place in Valley Stream and did crafts.

Driving and putting for the Buccaneers

The old saying, “A bad day of golf beats a good day at work,” was heard at the Inwood Country Club, where the Inwood Buccaneers Athletic Club held the fifth annual Frank DeCicco Memorial Golf Outing on July 16, and by the way the 72 participants slapped palms, shook hands and embraced — as family and good friends do — the adage was evident. The event honors the memory of Frank DeCicco Sr., a longtime Buccaneer booster.

Industry recognition for Warren Levi Martial Arts & Fitness

Warren Levi Martial Arts & Fitness, at Washington Avenue in Cedarhurst, received the Mark of Excellence Award from Century Martial Arts, a highly regarded industry organization, for its “unwavering dedication to quality martial arts instruction and community involvement” last month.

Junior firefighters battle in the park

Junior firefighters representing the Valley Stream Fire Department captured first place in the 3rd Battalion Juniors Tournament hosted by the Inwood Fire Department at North Woodmere Park on Aug. 2.

Fire damages Cedarhurst home

Lawrence-Cedarhurst firefighters responded to a house fire at 312 Pearsall Ave., Cedarhurst at 8:57 p.m. on Aug. 8.

Hewlett arrest nets gun and drugs

A man found sleeping in his car with the engine running was arrested after police found a loaded handgun, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine in Hewlett at 2:22 a.m. on Aug. 5.
